This is one of the original families that were released all the way back in 1987 (UK release), and I feel really proud that I have managed to find good condition figures so far with their original accessories, not broken. The grandparents still have their golden label on the underneath of their foot, even after all these years. I really like their glasses, they make me think of my real grandparents, and how they look after a few too many glasses of wine!
I really love the old, original families. You can tell that they have all been well played with, and well loved. There is just something so charming about them, don't you think?
The Flair re-release had figures with open hands, unlike the originals which have flat hands.
In the UK, a Celebration Family set was released in 2007, which added the elder brother and elder sister to the family for the first time. The older siblings had previously only been available in Japan in the early 1980's.
Also in 1987, Tomy released a wedding couple called Bobby and Louise Brighteyes, who look identical to the Babblebrook family.
Sylvanian pun! The older brother and sister names refer to TV morning presenters Richard and Judy in the UK. Google images of them, if you're not familar with them, and then ask why? Why did they name them after Richard & Judy?

Cliff Babblebrook has the gift of the gab. He tells the tallest tales you've ever heard with the straightest of faces. Everyone agrees that he should have been a second-hand car salesman, rather than a store keeper!
Crystal Babblebrook is the best cook in Sylvania, which is very surprising as her mother Pearl was the worst! Crystal has also written a 'cooking at home' book which covers everything from how to boil an egg, to how to bake a carrot cake.
Bubba Babblebrook has the most amazing sense of hearing. He might be at the far side of the playground but he can still hear you open a sweetie wrapper and be standing next to you in a flash. His mother teases him by telling everyone he can hear the grass grow!
Breezy Babblebrook always likes to have her own way. Her mother, Crystal, thinks that her father, Cliff, spoils her and should be firmer with her when she makes demands. He just shrugs his shoulders and says: "How can you be cross with her when she has such a pretty smile?"
Richard Babblebrook is the strong, silent type who is good at sports and most of her academic subjects, but very, very shy. He wants to be a tree surgeon when he leaves college because it's a job where he would be working alone in the woods of Sylvania.
Judy Babblebrook is the most outgoing person you will ever meet! Everyone thinks she should have been called Breezy or Bubbles, names that suit her personality perfectly. She breeze in and bubbles over gaiety and a zest for life.
Coral Babblebrook is really noisy, especially when she is hungry. Hungry for attention, cuddles, a toy or food. Cliff, her father, thinks she could represent Sylvania in the noise Olympics!
